Covid-19: Cameroon shuts all borders, as Arik Air halts West Africa flight operations

Arik Air has announced the suspension of flights to all West Coast destinations effective Monday, March 23, 2020.

A statement issued by the PR & Communications Manager, Adebanji Ola, Wednesday, explained that the management of the airline took the decision after a careful analysis of the Corona virus Disease (COVID-19) spread that has already been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Speaking on the development, the Chief Executive Officer of Arik Air, Captain Roy Ilegbodu said: “The safety and well-being of our personnel and valued customers are paramount at this critical time. We do not want to take chances and this is why we have taken this decision”.

The airline, therefore, apologised to customers whose travel plans may have been affected by the suspension of flights and promise to mitigate the effects by ensuring a prompt refund of tickets.

Meanwhile, barely 12 hours after Nigeria placed restrictions on travelers from high-risk Covid-19 countries from entering the country, eastern neighbours, Cameroon has closed all borders to the outside world with immediate effect and till further notice.

Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Joseph Ngute, Wednesday afternoon, announced the closure of all the country’s borders until further notice over the spreading corona virus.

Only, Tuesday, the southern Africa nation of Botswana banned entry for international visitors from the high-risk nation, while subjecting it’s national from these countries to a mandatory 14-day self quarantine.
