Sheraton Lagos wins Champion’s Excellence Award in Hospitality

Global hotel chain, the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc has bagged the Champion Newspapers’ Award for Excellence in the Hospitality Sector in Nigeria.

Formally receiving the plaque at the Sheraton Hotels Lagos, weekend, the Area Manager for the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc, in Nigeria, Mr. Barry Curran, expressed pleasure at winning the awards, further remarking that the prize will serve to motivate the staff and management of the hotel group to further strive for excellence in the industry.

The Sheraton Hotels, Lagos won the awards at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Champion Newspapers that also featured the 2014 edition of the annual Better Society Lecture, which took place December 12, 2014 in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

“On behalf of the staff and management of the hotel, we are glad to receive this award especially from you. Champion is a great newspaper and it will surely gladden the hearts of the staff to have gotten this award in appreciation of their contribution and pursuit of the best standards in hospitality. We have a lot of admiration for you and we are delighted to be working with your company towards the growth and development of the industry. Once again, I say thank you,” remarked Curran, who also doubles as the General Manager of the Sheraton Hotels, Lagos.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc, in addition to three additional hotels opening by the end of this year in Benin and Lagos, has five existing properties in the country which include the two Sheraton hotels in Lagos in Abuja, two Le Meridien brands in Akwa Ibom and Port Harcourt, as well as the Four Points by Sheraton brand in Lekki, Lagos. By 2015, Starwood will open three additional hotels in Nigeria, one property in Benin City and two in Lagos.

Earlier, head of the Champion Management delegation on the courtesy visit to the hotel and the Group Managing Director (GMD), Champion Newspapers Limited, Mrs Iheakanwa Nwadiuto, noted that the award was in recognition of the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos’ immense contribution to the realisation of the various programmes initiated by the Champion Newspapers Limited.

According to the Champion Newspapers, the award is also for the pioneering and trendsetting role of the hotel to the growth and development of the Nigerian hospitality industry since two decades of its establishment.

“As the popular song by Bette Midler goes, the Sheraton Hotels Lagos has indeed been ‘the wind beneath our wings,’ all these years. You have partnered with us in realising our goals, programmes and projects and even more than that, your organization has set the standards for the evolution of what we now know as the hospitality industry in Nigeria. Indeed, the Sheraton Lagos has provided the launchpad for the growth of other players in the hospitality sector, which is mainly the reason for this award.

“Indeed, the rousing ovation which greeted the mention of your name as one of the recipients of the awards for excellence is a huge testament of the pioneering role the Sheraton Hotel Lagos has played in the development of the hospitality industry in particular and by extension the tourism sector as well. As it is, everybody knows Sheraton Lagos as pacesetters in the Nigerian hospitality,” said the Champion Newspapers GMD.

The Champion Newspapers’ delegation to the Sheraton included the Chairman, Editorial Board/General Manager, Publications, Mr Simon Ibe and the Managing Editor, Mr. Luke Okoro.
