Curran replaces Gassauer as Sheraton Lagos GM

curranStarwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide has announced the appointment of Mr. Barry Curran to the position of Area Manager Nigeria and General Manager for the Sheraton Lagos Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria.

Curran effectively replaces Mr Alexander Gassauer, who retired from Starwood in April after well over two decades in the country as General Manager of the Sheraton Hotel Lagos and Area Manager of the Starwood in West Africa.

In his position, the newly-appointed Curran will report to Mr. Hassan Ahdab, Vice President, Regional Director- Africa & Indian Ocean.

Prior to this appointment, Curran was Area Manager Cairo Hotels based at Le Méridien Pyramids Hotel & Spa in Egypt, a position he had held since 2012.

Barry who is Irish by birth with education from Shannon College of Hotel Management and Cornell University took on his first role with Starwood Hotels & Resorts in 2005 as General Manager at Le Méridien Pyramids Hotel & Spa.

Curran has over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry and has filled various management positions in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Guyana and Egypt.

The New Area General Manager has consistently led the competitive set in terms of generated revenue and profitability in the following roles; Complex Manager Le Meridien Hotels Egypt, Area Manager Starwood Resorts Egypt from 2005 – 2012; and Area Manager Starwood Hotels Cairo from 2012 – 2013.

According to media statement made available to Champion Tourism by Ms Nanji Tyem, the Public Relations Manager for Starwood Hotels in Nigeria, the new General Manager has to his credit a proven track record in coaching and developing high performance teams and individuals, a number of which have been promoted to General Manager and Area roles. Barry also has a history of strong owner, staff and guest relations.

Curran recently oversaw the opening of two new hotels in Egypt; Le Meridien Dahab and Le Meridien Cairo Airport.
