IC Publications, 1:54 partner for Africa’s 1st int’l contemporary art fair

African media house IC Publications has announced its newly-formed partnership with the upcoming 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair.

Founded by Touria El Glaoui, daughter of celebrated Moroccan artist Hassan El Glaoui, 1:54 will be the first international art fair dedicated exclusively to contemporary African art and will run concurrently with the world-renowned London Frieze Art Fair from October 14 to 20, this year.

The fair will be held in the historic settings of Somerset House in central London and will be designed by award-winning Ghanaian/British architect, David Adjaye – the man responsible for the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo and the forthcoming $500m National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C.

IC Publications, publisher of well-known pan African titles including New African, African Business, African Banker and New African Woman and organiser of numerous African focused events such as African Banker Awards and African Business Awards, will provide media assistance throughout the duration of the partnership.

While 1:54, launching in London in October 2013, is a pre-eminent annual art fair focused on modern and contemporary African art.1:54 will provide a platform for African art and work with a carefully selected number of international specialized galleries to display and promote their artists in the iconic location of Somerset House.

1:54 will be an independent fair designed by the acclaimed architect David Adjaye, and will be accompanied by a series of lectures; discussions and film projections curated by Koyo Kouoh, and include speakers from the Smithsonian’s, National Museum of African Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and Iniva. 1:54 will run in parallel to Frieze.
