In a bid to establish credibility, integrity and trust in the Nigerian lottery culture, the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) is seeking the support of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation.

Director-General of the NLRC, Mr. Peter Igho solicited the support of NTDC when he visited his counterpart at the NTDC, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe in Abuja last Friday.

Igho who observed that Nigerians still do not fully appreciate the importance of lottery in national development, noted equally that tourism was in the same predicament before now.

According to him, this informed his visit which is to, among other things, take a cue from Runsewe in revolutionizing the tradition of lottery for the benefit of the economy in line with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Igho reasoned that since Runsewe has been able to weather the storm by bringing tourism from total obscurity to national consciousness, it was only normal for him to partner with NTDC in achieving a similar feat.

He explained that lottery is relevant because it is used all over the world as a major revenue earner for government recalling that when he assumed office, about 90 percent of Nigerians did not know the meaning of lottery or were suspicious of it because swindlers were having a field day operating.

The NLRC chief averred that with the present understanding between both outfits, Nigeria’s economy stands to gain massively from tourism and lottery benefits noting that it was a milestone in the quest for economic diversification.

Responding, Runsewe who said he had known Peter Igho since his days in broadcasting and eulogized his passion for the job saying Nigeria needed more of his kind, further commended the NLRC for projecting the essence of lottery into national awareness as he however admitted that he now knows more about lottery courtesy of Igho.

Runsewe who maintained that they both shared a common passion in transforming Nigeria in their different capacities, therefore advised Igho to be wary of detractors as he sojourns through his mandate just as he appealed to Nigerians to distinguish between gambling and lottery pointing out that countries like the United States, Taiwan, China and South Africa have used lottery to better the lives of their citizens.

Runsewe therefore urged the lottery commission to make adequate use of its website by featuring stakeholders, winners and sponsors for the general public to access in order to avoid negative perceptions.

Interestingly, the NTDC boss revealed that Taiwan actually has a lottery training institute, The National Taiwan University of Science and Technology where people can acquire knowledge and certificates on what lottery entails and how it impacts on national life.

Fielding questions from journalists, Igho said his commission was putting measures in place to address the socio-cultural perspective of lottery and ensure that lottery practices in the country are genuine adding that participants of lottery games should observe if officials of the commission are present at draws organized by corporate bodies or other interests otherwise it should be viewed with suspicion.
