Nigeria: Newly-inaugurated agency assures on lifting Rivers tourism

Director General of the newly-inaugurated Rivers State Tourism Development Agency, Dr. Sam Dede, has assured that agency will massively develop the tourism potentials of the state to help boost the economy.

The Nollywood actor, Sam Dede who was speaking at the Inaugural Meeting of the agency, noted the tourism sector in Rivers State was virtually non-existent and that his agency will revive the sector without wasting time.

“You will soon begin to see what we mean when we say experience Rivers.  We need to get everybody back to begin to see that there are potentials that Rivers State is endowed with. We know that this is a huge challenge for us but definitely with the calibre of people in the board, we will achieve.”

The chairman of the Rivers State Tourism Development Agency, Engr. Emeka Woke, stated that the board will collaborate with other stakeholders in the state in order to achieve its set out goals.

Woke stated that the Agency will traverse the nooks and crannies of Rivers State in order to tap the numerous tourism potentials, rub minds together and come up with viable blue print that will move tourism forward in the State.

“We will meet with the Traditional Institution and the Local Government Councils, to find out the tourism potentials in their localities and their cultures,” said Woke.

Woke also assured that the Rivers State Zoo, would be upgraded, while the Opobo annual Boat Regatta would be brought to an international standard.

He hinted that the tourism searchlight would also beam on the oil and gas which the state is known for.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Dan Ibubeleye, who represented the Commissioner, said the necessity of the Agency is underscored by the need to tap the vast and robust cultural and tourism resources and potentials as a major force for socio-economic development of Rivers State.

Ibubeleye, said the Rivers State Government is determined to develop, protect and showcase its natural endowments and it is in this wise that Governor Chibuike Amaechi has put in place agencies like this that will make the tourism industry a key priority in the growth of the economy.
